A small bedroom can cause you to feel claustrophobic, and as you might not have the capability to alter the space physically, you may give the space the appearance of more space by using paint. You’ve more than one way to go about this, and also the method that you choose depends on whether the space has to be visually wider or taller. Your single wall colour options rely on the final decor scheme, furnishings and other wall colours in the room.
Spacious Colors
Light colors open up a room, while dark colours make it smaller. Off-white with underlying blue tones produces an airy feeling, especially behind the bed. To start up a room, then avoid using contrasting colours, which define the room’s dimensions. If there are dark colours in the room, never worry. You can still use a light color to start up the space. For a brief room, paint the end wall opposite the door a lighter color to make the room look larger. Artfully placed lighting may amplify the result.
A Lighter Ceiling
A small room can feel oppressive if the ceiling and walls are dark, and if you have to select just one surface to paint, make it the ceiling — although it is not a technically not a wall. Should you paint it white, off-white or light blue, the sense of atmosphere and space at the top part of the room may give the feeling of more room in which to stand and breathe. Amplify this belief by painting the wall opposite the main door exactly the same — or a color very similar to — the ceiling. Don’t do so is that the space is thin, though. The side walls might turn out to be overly noticeable, and the space might feel much narrower.
The Long Wall
To make the room look larger visually, paint the longest wall in the space a lighter shade than the present wall’s colors, like light green with sage green walls. This wall runs parallel to the bed or over from it and from the door, which may make the room seem somewhat wider by making it lighter to that side. If this is the window wall, then add light drapes and paint the trim white to illuminate the room with natural light. Keep furnishings on the wall to a minimum to maximize its impact in the room.
The Feature Wall
Each room has a featured wall, that’s the one most central to this color scheme. In a bedroom using a centrally-placed bed, then it is usually the one behind the headboard. The color of this featured wall has more effect on the sense of space dimensions than the colours of the other walls, and a single method to make it look farther away would be to paint it darker than the walls on each side. Painting the baseboard and crown molding a lighter shade than the wall colour has the exact same impact.
