Country Comfort in Pennsylvania

It’s difficult not to fall in love with the cabin charm of this 1940s Pennsylvania home. Owners Donna and Blair Skundrich have a difficult time selecting the best part. Although it initially took some eyesight to see the possible, two renovations within 15 years have made it glow. A perennial country backyard, reclaimed treasures, antique furniture, original hardwood floors and architectural details maintain the home’s original personality in an inviting and timeless manner.

The dining room looks toward the inviting living room, outfitted with comfortable contemporary furnishings and tons of natural lighting. The oversized sectional sofa is excellent for entertaining family and friends or simply relaxing after a long workweek. Donna brought in natural, garden-inspired elements like a wicker table lamp along with potted plants.

In the back end of the living room, built-in bookcases flank a reclaimed desk and chair to produce the family’s library. The accumulated valance mirrors the profile of this trimwork, adding to the home’s quaint cabin feel. On the desk, a basket holds the usual clutter of background supplies. “I utilize baskets and shelving to conceal or display items that I just can not seem to part with,” Donna says.

The formal dining area marks the brand new addition to the home, which combines entertaining and eating into one large, open space. Made up almost entirely of reclaimed and refurbished antiques, the dining area is balanced by the new architecture. The seat, which Blair refinished, replaces chairs on one side of the table to get a more casual way of formal dining.

Spare decor in the corner of this dinette makes for a serene uplifting space. The side table, a garage sale find, complements the original hardwood floor. Donna receives a lot of inspiration from the pages of different country and cabin magazines; after locating a picture from a magazine, then she asked a neighbor to build the customized wood radiator cabinet.

Donna’s passion for gardening is evident throughout the home. On the dinette, an oversized cloche from Arhaus covers a potted plant. Donna says, “I enjoy decorating together with things I treasure or love. This way, each and every day once I come home from a stressful day, it brings a grin to my face”

The few gutted and rebuilt the kitchen to match the contemporary farm style that they love. They chose closets with beadboard doors and exposed the original hardwood floors, bringing out the home’s inherent personality. Stainless steel cup brings offer a quintessential country flavor in an updated way.

This publish, dating back into the late 19th century, hangs low over the kitchen counter tops. The Skundriches discovered the piece in a New Orleans antiques shop during one of many treasure hunting trips.

Red trimming from the door echoes from the formal living area, where informal patterns give rustic allure. As part of the home’s original footprint, much of the distance was left undisturbed. Donna discovered the nesting baskets at a flea market, and a needlepoint cushion supports the classic feel.

This exterior deck sits directly off of this great room. “Both my spouse and I enjoy spending some time out here, speaking, watching the wildlife, seeing what is blooming in the garden and entertaining family and friends over a good bottle of wine,” Donna says. The glass-pane doorway joins to the deck also allows light to flow in during daylight hours. The iron bedframe gives the room a subtle classic touch, and a wicker chaise maintains the property’s connection to the outdoors.

The characteristic wall of the home office takes advantage of this tall room with a wall shelf. Used to exhibit botanical prints and Donna’s topiary collection, the coat rack beneath aids in the transition from outside to in. Blair created the coat rack by means of a board of old barn wood and classic hooks, with a dedicated hook for every family member to maintain outerwear organized.

A winding route to your home’s refinished, front door takes guests through a menagerie of greenery and color in the perennial garden. Donna visits local nurseries every spring to develop her must-have listing. “A fast and inexpensive way to start your backyard is to visit the greenhouse at the end of the year for the best prices,” says Donna.

A collection of birdhouses is scattered around the property, bringing hummingbirds and other winged visitors for your family to enjoy. Donna discovered these particular pieces at the yearly Shaker Woods Festival in Ohio.
