Design Studio Was Wonderful

All architects spent a great deal of time in “studio” Just ask them. They’ll let you know. Studio was a place in design school. A place where young architects in training gathered for hours on end to enhance their designs. A place where the coffeepot was constantly on and the ideas flowed like … coffee. (Sorry, I am on my third straight day without sleep, and I’ve got a demonstration first thing in the morning, so I really don’t have enough time to get analogies.)

Studio was challenging, and it was developed to be challenging. Studio was just like boot camp for layout. It was the fundamental course in our architecture education, and for most of us, it turned into a home away from home, mainly because we spent time in studio than we ever did in the home, so it turned into more like our house than our actual home. (Again, it’s my morning straight without sleep. I am not interested in run-on sentences at this time.)

Our work in studio would culminate in a design review, which we predicted a “crit.” (We were too tired to use the complete word.) On the morning of this crit, we would pin up our drawings, stand in front of them and present the layout to our fellow classmates and a selection of bored professors. This was intended to prepare for the rigors of presenting to clients in the “real world”

Which it completely did, since the real world is tough, and you rarely get enough sleep to correctly address it. Studio has been wonderful.
