Laws of the Jungle: How to Get That Lush, Tropical Look

I’m not talking modern tropical or rattan furniture. I am discussing the lush, steamy, full-to-bursting appearance of the jungle. Pattern on pattern, green anywhere. Big, bold blossoms and layer upon layer of color.

OK, so a jungle area might be a little overbearing (not to mention humid), but you can steal elements of that jungle lushness. A sign of this Amazon goes a long way.

Listed below are a few ideas to up the tropical, Heart of Darkness feel.

Color and Pattern

Vibrant tropical florals can be intimidating, but if they are in an otherwise impartial and modern room, they add just the right amount of jungle exuberance.

This background mural is a fantasy jungle come true (complete with nymph). The glowing leaf-green Acapulco chair ups the tropical vibe, but nothing feels oppressive since there’s still so much distance.

Green

The jungle is green. Layer upon layer upon layer of it. Even when you’re not going to get a jungle or tropical motif, green can give a room that feeling of cool lushness. It is a cocooning color.

This mint green does exactly the job since it is paired with exotic elements like a zebra carpet (fake, I hope), a red floor (ever see the dirt in Kauai?) And a couple of palms.

Colonial Luxurious

The plantation colonial appearance is its style. Think 19th-century English style satisfies the tropics. It is a mix of buttoned up and completely crazy. The area, with its unruly palms and bird cages, is the ideal example.

This billiards room has a similar appearance, but it may be just a little too slick and tidy. A little bit of chaos goes a long way in straining the jungle.

I love everything about this vignette — the amazing emerald green, the hands motif on the upholstery and the surprising placement of the color. It is simple and not just verdant, but it implies the jungle in subtle ways.

Another illustration of modern jungle. It is all white and feminine, and then there is that delicate but lush palm background.

I need this background everywhere. Nonetheless, it’s nice as an accent, also.
